The work we scoped and managed to stabilise this small remnant of a the fire destroyed the neo-classical mansion of an early 19th Century industrial estate in South Wales addressed several technical challenges. The commission arose because the large Pantglas estates grounds had become a chalet park. A planning permission to expand this use had been taken up but a condition to investigate and stabilise the ruins had not been discharged. This had the effect of delegitimizing the already established use and so the sites economic base. Urgent action was needed to prevent escalation of the dispute which was already the subject of enforcement proceedings.
We explained to the owners the seriousness of their position and how a scope of works for the necessary restoration and conservation task could be achieved economically by a day hire of a 30-metre access hoist. This allowed us to present an outline specification of the likely works to the enforcement officer rapidly evidencing the undertaking of the necessary works was in hand.
By keeping the local conservation officer well informed of each stage of the work the planning dispute was a satisfactory result in a short space of time.
