The COVID-19 virus crisis has understandably replaced the issue of global climate and biodiversity change in the news headlines in recent weeks.
Most of us can see the much-changed economy recession will bring should be rebuilt as the zero-carbon economy. We can see that as so much carbon generating activity has scaled down in recent weeks, we have all had to experience simpler lifestyles, needing less consumption and travel. Amongst much real hardship for many we have also found much of good through it all. How our country sets about re-building the economy within the constraints the virus will demand needs careful thought.
As the lockdown began, we published our Tools for Climate Change document. It explores the human origins of climate change, as a historic phenomenon to be understood and learnt from, and not only a technical challenge to be addressed. Only once there is understanding of where the high consumption economy came from there can be understanding of the processes by which beneficial change happens. It anticipates the roles the governance, public, private, professional advisory and education sectors will play. It explores the lessons we can learn from past national wartime crisis to show how a command and control economy delivered change when urgent change was needed.
