Our work at the 79ha Glenavon Farm site between Bath and Bristol has helped to create an important and sustainably-focused new business: “Flourish” – a purpose-driven foodhall, kitchen and home store.
What did we do? Our work involved the renovation of some redundant barns on a 0.58ha section of the farm by building on the existing footprint and sympathetically extending to create the farm shop and restaurant, plus car park and access improvements.
Our proposal also included the restoration and relocation of a farm silo from the front of the East Barn to the front of the West barn, bound by an informal seating area and covering a new herb garden. This restored silo (seen on the left of the photo below) is now used as an attractive feature which highlights the main entrance to the farm shop.

The next phase of work included converting an existing barn to a wood burning stove showroom with storage space. This use complemented that of the farm shop and restaurant.
Located in the green belt, a key policy consideration was showing that the openness of the green belt would be preserved, despite an overall increase in activity at the site. The planning case also tackled a number of other issues relating to out-of-town retail development, residential amenity, highways, ecology and farm diversification.
Both phases of work are now complete and in use today.
Flourish at Glenavon Farm was crowned the winner of the ‘Rising Star’ category at the Farm Retail Awards 2022 and in 2023, it was named a finalist of the Farm Shop and Deli Retailer Awards.
