McArthur’s Yard in Bristol has been named a winner in the ‘Residential Development’ category at the Bristol Property Awards, scooping its second accolade in as many months.
John Everett (Design Studio Director, Nash Partnership) and his guest Jonathan Davies (Construction, Design & Quality Manager, Guinness Partnership) collected the prestigious award at the recent event. The scheme’s win comes hot on the heels of being crowned ‘Development of the Year’ at the SW Property Awards. It was also named ‘Best New Development in the South’ at the 2023 First Buyer Readers’ Awards.
The Bristol Property Awards judges described McArthur’s Yard as an “excellent scheme. Unusual and striking but in keeping with harbourside surroundings, all set to transform the area to new heights.”
Delivering 142 high quality homes in the heart of Bristol, the McArthur’s Yard development has transformed a central site which was derelict for more than 20 years. It now offers a collection of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and duplexes arranged over three elegantly designed buildings, with vibrant flexible commercial use space on the ground floor. Given the failure of previous redevelopment attempts by others, it was one of the last sites in the harbourside area to be developed – so expectations of the local community were high. Balancing the views of individuals as well as local groups was important to the project’s success.
Nash Partnership’s involvement included securing planning permission whilst providing planning-stage design services to client Guinness Partnership. Contractor Hill Group delivered the finished scheme, with residents now moving in.
Commenting on the win, John Everett from Nash Partnership said: “McArthurs Yard was a run-down site that hadn’t seen any activity for decades. Sitting in a conservation area in a key central location, its redevelopment posed plenty of opportunities as well as challenges. With the right mix of uses and an eye-catching contemporary design, it’s now bringing much-needed housing and commercial opportunities to the city. We’re very proud to have its contribution recognized with this latest award.”
In an unexpected twist, two winners in the ‘Residential Development’ category were announced at the event. Alongside McArthur’s Yard, ‘The Old Brewery’ in Southville secured a joint top spot – a project for which Nash Partnership also gained planning permission and provided planning-stage design services. Judges described this as a “Big success plotted by Abri Homes, with residents moving in next Spring. Massively affordable, numerous reservations and integrating history.”
