In 2018, we were appointed to manage the regeneration strategy and the design for a 9-acre site next to the historic town centre of Frome in Somerset.
Frome is a lively, independent-minded town. The site is well-placed and was purchased by Mendip District Council and Frome Town Council. Its future pattern of use is being planned in response to Mendip’s place on the long list of UK towns and cities that have declared a climate change emergency.
By creating a large quantity of new employment and housing designed for working from home, the mixed-use scheme will support low car use living and working. In turn, this will place high expectations on the quality and utility of the urban public realm to service a population in-situ more of their daily lives than is commonly the case. There will be a high ratio of green canopy, living and public realm, spaces for special gardening, a riverside park and very low car ownership ratio in our bespoke design for developers, the Acorn Property Group.
The site directly adjoins Frome’s medieval heart and road closures and diversions are planned to allow full integration and hypermobility for pedestrians and cyclists.
