Planning a new energy city in Jigawa, Nigeria
We are working for the Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency (REA), which is the Implementing Agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria, and GOPA-International Energy Consultants GmbH (intec) to masterplan a world class ‘renewable energy city’ across two sites of around 2,000 ha. This will enable renewable energy generation companies to produce a total of 1GW of on-grid electricity. The project will help meet the government’s energy ambitions for the country, which include increasing solar power as a proportion of the overall mix to 20% by 2030.
Key objectives include:
- Bringing jobs and services to a deprived region of Northern Nigeria
- Promoting active and sustainable travel by non-car modes
- Integrating urban agriculture and promoting contextually sensitive, environmentally responsive design
- Supporting capacity development and innovation in the renewables sector
- Providing significant opportunities for human development, seeing significant investment in employment opportunities, education provision and other physical and social infrastructure
